The MKH 8020 is a pressure-type microphone with an omnidirectional pickup pattern. Because it has no proximity effect, it can be used close to a source as well as at a distance. Its frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 60 kHz, which includes an extra octave at the low end for instruments such as pipe organ, grand piano and acoustic double bass.
The transducer is a symmetrical design with two backplates, aimed at very low distortion and very low self-noise (10 dB(A) equivalent noise level). A non-reflective Nextel coating is applied to the body. The microphone suits stereo and surround work, use as an M microphone in mid/side setups, and ambience capture. It is also sold as a stereo pair.
It has a modular build: the MKHC 8020 microphone head attaches to an MZX 8000 XLR module. Output is through a balanced, transformerless, floating XLR-3M connector, and the microphone runs on 48 V phantom power. A clip, windshield and transport case are supplied.
