The M 149 Tube is a modern take on the M 49 tube microphone. It uses the same dual-diaphragm K 47/49 capsule in an acoustically open headgrille, followed by a selected subminiature triode tube and a transformerless output stage. Current sensing keeps the tube at suitable operating conditions, and the low output impedance allows cable runs of up to 300 m.
Nine directional characteristics are available: omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, figure-8 and an intermediate position between each. A 7-position low cut covers 20 to 160 Hz in half-octave steps. Self-noise is 13 dB-A in cardioid mode, and maximum SPL reaches 136 dB at 5% distortion. Suggested uses include vocals, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, upright bass, percussion, drum overheads, strings, brass and woodwinds.
The microphone connects to the supplied N 149 A power supply through the KT 8 cable (DIN 8 on the microphone side, XLR 3 F on the power supply). It is offered in 230 V EU, 117 V US and 230 V UK versions, all in a nickel finish, and won a TEC Award in 1997.
