The CDP4A is a CD-only player built around Hegel's in-house CD drive mechanism, which uses redesigned servo motors and synchronised timing across the digital section. The maker lists a 24-bit, 352 kHz multilevel DAC stage with synchronised upsampling and a jitter figure below 10 ps, driven by its second-generation master clock.
Compared with the CDP2A, the CDP4A has a more advanced audio board with more precise components and a more complex power supply. The maker states this gives it a larger dynamic range, lower colouration and better analog outputs. Operation is limited to two front-panel buttons, and a system remote control is supplied. The curved front panel earned the Norwegian Design Council's award for design excellence.
For connection, the player has RCA unbalanced and XLR balanced analog outputs, both at 2.3 V. A 75 ohm SPDIF digital output on an RCA connector allows it to feed a separate D/A converter such as the HD10. The player is listed on the maker's discontinued products page.
