The Acapulco Gold is a distortion pedal with a deliberately minimal layout: a footswitch for on/off and one large knob that sets output level. There are no gain or tone controls, so the amount of drive and the tonal colour are shaped from the guitar. Turning the guitar's volume down reduces gain, and rolling back its tone control gives a darker rhythm sound.
With the guitar volume fully up, the pedal gives a loud, wide-open amp-style roar. Backing the guitar off slightly gives a rough overdrive, and at minimum volume the sound is hazy and spanky. On a guitar with separate volume and tone controls per pickup and a three-way switch, the pedal can be used as a three-channel setup. The output level can be very high, so the maker advises caution.
The pedal is true bypass with electronic relay-based switching, so no audio passes without power. It runs from a 9 V DC supply through a 2.1 mm negative-center barrel connector and draws 18 mA. The maker recommends isolated, pedal-specific power supplies and warns against higher voltages. It is built by hand in Akron, Ohio.
