The Fono MC MK4 amplifies the signal from low output moving coil cartridges and applies RIAA equalization. Its all-discrete input stage is built around a Linear Systems LSK389 low-noise FET, whose high input impedance keeps the circuit from loading the cartridge. A MUSE operational amplifier handles RIAA equalization, and polypropylene capacitors are used in the signal path and equalization circuits.
Gain and loading are set with DIP switches on the rear panel. Two gain settings are available, along with selectable input resistance and capacitance, which lets it work with many third-party low output MC cartridges as well as Rega's own. Factory settings are matched to all Rega MC models: 100 Ω, 1000 pF and high gain.
The circuit grew out of development work on the Aria phono amplifier. The unit sits in a redesigned aluminium case that matches the Fono MM MK5 and Neo MK2 PSU, and runs from a 24 V AC supply.
